AIMS is in the fairly unique position of having run and administrated Specialist Post-Graduate Fellowship Programme’s for over 30 years. AIMS has sponsored hundreds young of surgeons from Australia and around the world to complete accredited sub-specialty training and research through the Institute and its Member Surgeons.

Based in busy practices or hospitals, you will find details of each Fellowship offered in our Fellowship Directory. Further details on the Supervising Surgeons including their locations,  type of practice and Fellowship type can be found in the Surgeons Directory. The programmes are focused on acquiring specialist experience and knowledge in a greater depth than that provided in an accredited training programme.

The Fellowships are short-term positions open to “Senior” Orthopaedic trainees wishing to expand their knowledge and experience and designed to enhance sub-specialty training. The Fellowships are either six or 12 month posts and we are happy to organise consecutive Fellowships to complete advanced sub-specialty training requirements. Each Fellowship allocates time for research activities with projects led by AIMS and its Member Surgeons however there is scope for the Fellows to follow their own line of interest.

The Fellows are attached to orthopaedic surgeons during their term and participate in patient examination, consultation and follow-up and taking part in surgery where accredited (at your continually assessed level of proficiency). Where possible, the Fellow will be expected to contribute to Registrar and Medical Student education by becoming involved in leadership and teaching opportunities. Successful candidates are expected to attend and present at a number of annual conferences both nationally and internationally. Journal articles are submitted to the various international orthopaedic journals such as The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Applicants will need to pass Primary Source Verification through the Australian Medical Council. All applicants need to be registrable with the Medical Board of Australia and guidance is provided on application. Proficiency in English is mandatory using the IELTS academic, OET, NZREX or PLAB tests. Please note some Fellowships will demand a score of 8 or OET A in each category. Other requirements include: Evidence of Internship, Medical Indemnity Insurance and to hold private health cover (reciprocal healthcare can be acceptable, but top up cover is advised).

It is expected that applicants will have completed a “minimum” of four years “Specialist” training scheme by the start of your Fellowship. If your training programme is shorter than this, you will need to evidence that you have undertaken further clinical positions. Research Fellowships may be accepted on a case by case basis. You will be sponsored for a 402 Occupational Trainee Visa and be able to undertake up to two years Specialty training in Australia. Criteria for entry includes the declaration to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons of your intention to return to your country of training at the end of the post.

Through AIMS, you can apply for up to six Fellowships up to two years in advance. When you apply, you will be issued with an AIMS ACCOUNT and a log-in. We will confirm the outcome of your application/s and successful applicants will be guided through the complex process leading to short-term medical registration in Australia.

Certificates are issued on satisfactory completion of Fellowships.
